Step 2:
For lettering, type must be set by hand, one letter at a time into a composing stick. The individual lines are moved to an incredibly flat surface called a composing stone to be combined together into a larger unit. They are then locked together in a metal frame called a chase. All areas in the printed piece which are to remain blank must be filled in with wood an metal spacing which is less than type high. The contents of the chase (called the form) are locked together using metal wedges called quoins. When the process is completed successfully the individual letters will hold together firmly and act as if they were one.
